eNow is an innovative, clean-technology company that specializes in renewable energy systems for the transportation industry. When they came to us in early 2012, the start-up company was generating substantial interest from both investors and partners and they needed a visual identity that would support their growing business as they attracted higher profile attention.
At this time, they were using a logo and a website that had been put together “just so they would have something", but as the company started to pick up momentum and their promotional needs began to grow, they realized they needed a website and supporting marketing materials that would help support that growth. To help fill those needs, they turned to Envision's design team.
With initial kickoff meetings launched, the first part of this engagement was identified as the logo design. A logo is often an organization’s primary piece of visual identity and we wanted to be sure that the eNow logo and mark defined the brand qualities that eNow wanted to exhibit – a high tech, innovative, and modern organization.
With the brand attributes established and the tone we were looking set, we created a number of logo options for the first round of this process.
After presenting a variety of possible designs, three different designs were chosen to move into the next round of the process and a number of variations on those designs were presented in that second round. Additional feedback and changes were made until the final logo was approved, setting the stage for the next phase of the project – the website’s design.
Designing the Website
Similar to the design process used during the logo’s creation, the website’s design is an iterative process. Three different Envision designers created a unique look for the homepage of the site and those designs were then presented to eNow. Questions were answered and strategy reviewed as we eventually chose one of the 3 designs to proceed with, making changes and adjustments as needed along the way.
Building the Website
With designs approved and the start of content in place, the next phase of our project was the development of the site. The site was built using the latest in web standards technology, including HTML5 and CSS3, and the entire project was integrated into the ExpressionEngine Content Management System. With the platform, publishers from eNow could easily manage the website’s content – editing existing entries or publishing new ones all from a simple, web-based interface.
Testing in a variety of devices, from large desktop computers, to iPads and tablet devices, to smartphones and more, were conducted during this process to ensure the site performed according to the capabilities and/or limitations of each device and each web browser. To support these different devices and screen sizes, the eNow website was developed using a "responsive" approach. This approach dynamically reflows the site's layout based on the screen size being used to access it. This meant that eNow had one site to manage and maintain and that site is optimized for the widest range of devices possible.
Once the site was fully tested and all content published, the new site was launched and announced to the public. That site can be seen at www.enowenergy.com.
Supporting Marketing Materials
To help support the company's promotional push, we next redesigned eNow's business cards and printed marketing materials with both the new look and feel of the company brand and much of the new content that was developed for the website.
We even wrapped a 17-foot trailer truck that was equipped with eNow’s innovative energy solutions with branded graphics that act as a moving billboard for the company’s offerings.
