Project Spotlights

Redwood Library & Athenæum

Chartered in 1747, the Redwood Library & Athenæum in Newport, Rhode Island is a library, a museum, and a National Historic Landmark.  Today, the Library boasts a wide range of programming and events for the public, as well as offering many special collections to researchers and scholars worldwide.  When such a historic organization needed help with its network infrastructure, they turned to the team at Envision Technology Advisors.

Envision’s engagement with the Redwood Library began in 2012 with an onsite assessment of the business goals and network infrastructure.  Part of this assessment was a detailed look at overall technology planning and the establishment of a solution to handle potential security threats, virus penetration, and updating of workstations and laptops.

With our initial assessment complete, Envision was able to plan and prepare for a complete network infrastructure upgrade. This upgrade included replacing their aging physical server environment with a VMware ESXi host, Sonicwall TZ-series firewall appliance, Extreme Networks switching, and an online backup solution. We also deployed new desktop PCs for the entire organization and migrated all email over to Google Apps cloud accounts.  Additionally, Redwood Library subscribed to Envision’s Ground Control suite of proactive cloud solutions. Through Ground Control, Envision now provides cloud backup solutions and remote monitoring/management of all end points, including their firewall, to improve network security.

Redwood Library and AthenæumDuring this project, Envision made the bold decision to create a new Windows domain.  Although this strategy was more time consuming, the long-term value in doing it perfectly at this point, where the entire infrastructure was being overhauled, was identified as an important opportunity. This forward thinking approach to the future of the library’s infrastructure and technology needs was something Envision’s engineers looked for through the entire project process.

With the network infrastructure update completed, the staff at the Redwood Library and Athenæum can now take advantage of the upgrades Envision have made to the organization’s technology. The immediate benefits include increased speed between buildings thanks to a 10GB fiber link between the Extreme Networks switches, SSL VPN access that allows employees to work remotely from home when necessary, and savings in time thanks to their email’s migration away from an Exchange environment to the cloud.

While the successful completion of a project is something to be recognized and enjoyed, Envision takes great pride in not only our successful project engagements, but also in the long-term partnerships that we form with our clients. As such, Envision and the Redwood Library and Athenæum continue to work together on technology initiatives to meet the short term and long term goals for the Library.
